4 ways to shred the dread and move more this winter
Do the darker, colder winter months have you running for cover under your duvet? Do you peer outside at the bare branches and dream of campfires, sand between your toes and planting your favourite flowers? Are you trying to wait it out for the brighter, warmer days ahead?
It’s OK, cut yourself some slack. You’re far from alone.
Here are four helpful ways to Make Your Move, shed your dread and help others this winter. It’s a win-win way to Take The Roof Off Winter!
Accompany a senior to get the mail
You may know a senior near you who doesn’t get many visitors. Why not invite them to walk or wheel with you to the community mailbox or the lobby and to get their mail? Make sure weather conditions are safe and the ground is free of ice if you’re heading outdoors.
The isolation of senior citizens plays a major role in the decline of their physical and mental well-being. Your offer gives them a chance to have a chat with a friend and get some fresh air, and may help them build confidence.
The mail is secondary, it’s really about connecting and supporting others and staying active.
Offer to walk a neighbour’s dog
Do you love animals? It’s a proven fact that being around animals helps lower stress levels. If you know someone with a mature dog that’s well trained, is familiar with you, and is used to being around people and walking outdoors, why not offer to take their dog around the block for 10 minutes or so?
If it goes well, consider offering to do it once or twice weekly. Frequent short walks are good for you and the dog. You can also look after Fido indoors – most dogs will keep you moving whether you’re inside or outside.
Collect and donate cold weather items
Spring cleaning can always start early, especially if it helps people. Start now and get active around your home while you’re gathering items for others in need.
Round up gently used or unused items that can help people living rough this winter – things like blankets, coats, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, socks, boots or new personal care items. Your donations will help multiple people.
Housing is an issue facing residents of every city and town in Nova Scotia. Choose a shelter near you that is accepting donations and drop off a donation bag. Someone may need that blanket or hat tonight.
Make a meal for someone or collect food bank items
If you have the means, make a meal and deliver it to a friend or neighbour who needs a lift, whether they are sick, isolated, need someone to talk to or are a newcomer to Nova Scotia.
Don’t have the time to cook and deliver a meal? Food banks are always in need of supplies. Winter is especially tough when community gardens aren’t producing food. Start a donation campaign in your workplace, school or neighbourhood, or offer to help gather, pack and drop supplies at your local food bank. Every move counts.
Helping starts with each of us.
Shaking off the dread of winter and moving more can help make a difference in the lives of others. Make your move and help someone today.
