Helping Nova Scotians move more at work

When it comes to increasing movement and decreasing sedentary behaviour, it’s clear Nova Scotians need a culture shift.

We spend half of our waking life at work – and close to 70% of our waking hours are sedentary. This is an ideal opportunity for Nova Scotia employers to play a leadership role in promoting increased movement throughout the day.

Our Make Your Move at Work (MYMAW) program offers a solution to help inspire this culture shift, by supporting people in workplaces across the province to easily add more movement into the workday, supporting physical and mental health and wellness.

The MYMAW program is free for any workplace in Nova Scotia and was built to be flexible. The MYMAW team will work directly with organizations to tailor the programming to fit their unique needs – whether the organizations are large or small, with employees working in the office, from home or in a hybrid arrangement.

Instead of focusing on what is traditionally considered “exercise” (think lunch-time boot camps), the MYMAW program is designed to prioritize simple movements and breaking up the amount of time we spend sitting or remaining still. We want to motivate people to think about movement differently, help them recognize moving more is easy and show that all the small bouts of movement throughout the day count toward overall activity.

When we move more, even a little more, we improve our overall wellness, and more importantly – we feel better!

The MYMAW program is supported by significant research and evidence that outlines the importance of making movement throughout the day a priority. The wraparound program is based on a toolkit developed by Dr. Jonathon Fowles and his research associates with the Centre of Lifestyle Studies at Acadia University.

The toolkit includes assessment tools for employers and employees to establish benchmarks, best practices for policies, practices and programs, an overview of the ROI benefits and resources for employees who work from home.
