Reconnect with your joy
How many times have you heard that if you want to be healthy, you need to commit to a demanding diet and exercise program?
As a physician specializing in women’s health, I often treat patients who would greatly benefit from making small tweaks to their daily routines, such as adding more simple movement to their day.
A lot of people don’t want to move more because they think of it as work. But it doesn’t have to be. Why not make it fun?
Finding joy in movement
Making dinner? Stir the pot while listening to your favourite music and don’t be afraid to swing your hips. Better yet, have a dance-off with your friends or your children. You could also take up playing the air guitar or challenge your family to a tickle fight. These activities are memorable, fun and don’t feel like work.
Autumn—more than pumpkin spiced lattes
A change of season is a great opportunity to change up how you move. With the arrival of fall, apple picking or participating in a harvest are wonderful outdoor activities. If you’re close to the Annapolis Valley, don’t miss out on a walk-about to see the pumpkin people –a beloved Nova Scotia tradition.
The fall colours in Nova Scotia are spectacular! Journey to a nearby trail to collect your fall arts and craft supplies. If you’re eyeing activities to do with your kids or planning to host a festive meal, you can find your materials for free: multi-coloured leaves, pine cones and evergreen foliage provide endless inspiration.
And if you’re feeling spooky, why not take a walk into a corn maze, if you dare!
Re-connect
Going for a walk with a senior, a child or a pet is beneficial for them and for you. Being outside in nature is good for your mental wellness. An activity like this helps you stay connected with family and friends, which is always important. If you can’t meet in person, you can stay connected through video call apps. They can bring us together safely and create new memories as we continue to social distance due to COVID-19.
It’s the small things
Ultimately, I hope that this is a reminder that letting loose, having fun with friends and family, and getting outside, all makes a difference to your overall wellbeing. Moving more is easy when you are reconnecting with what makes you happy.
Remember: YOU are IMPORTANT and so is your health
