Slay your staycation this summer in Nova Scotia

June is Recreation Month in Nova Scotia. With restrictions slowly lifting to allow travel throughout the province, it’s a time to get out and get active as we savour all that summer has to offer.

Even if this isn’t the summer we hoped for, it could be the one we all need, because we can get back to basics and really enjoy what we have right here.

Consider these ideas to keep you and your family active while making new summer memories.

Go fly a kite

Nova Scotia has no shortage of windy days! With just a few household materials, you can be soaring in no time.

According to instructables.com, all you need to get started is a plastic bag, string, two sticks, scissors and ribbon or string. Check out their garbage bag kite here. Be sure to tag us in the comments if you make your own! Be sure you’re not close to power lines or other people so you can achieve liftoff safely.

Beachcombing

As we’re now able to move throughout the province, it’s time to hit the beach. And in Nova Scotia, the ocean is never too far from home. Even if the water isn’t warm enough for swimming in June, there’s still lots of fun to be had.

Along with typical summer necessities, like sunblock, pack your imagination. Walking along the shoreline, it’s a sure bet that you’ll find all sorts of beautiful shells, coloured rocks and even sand dollars, if you’re lucky. Want to get your hands dirty? Sand sculptures are a great way to be creative and take in some light recreation.

Washer toss

A long-standing favourite game in Nova Scotia, washer toss makes a fun family or bubble activity. You don’t need to be at a campground to enjoy it. Whether you’re at a park or at home, it’s an easy game to transport and set up. Don’t have your own washer toss game? You can easily make one yourself with a few tools and basic materials. Just follow these instructions.

Hiking provincial trails

Along with beautiful beaches, Nova Scotia has some very scenic walking trails. You don’t need to go far from home to get to one, either. Check out this blog post we wrote with Hike Nova Scotia that showcases accessible trails throughout the province – no hiking boots required. You may want to bring a picnic basket with you and enjoy lunch al fresco.

Make art

If you’ve been collecting little treasures during your summer staycation adventures, take it one step further and get creative. Incorporate your finds into fairy villages, painted sticks, flower crowns, painted rocks, mosaics – the options are as limitless as your imagination. Perhaps think ahead to making holiday season ornaments with your treasures so your staycation memories become beloved traditions. For some found art ideas, visit this link.
