Starting Small — your 2025 active lifestyle secret
As the new year begins, many Nova Scotians have already set their goals and created vision boards to reflect what they hope to achieve. (If you haven’t done so yet or you’re not interested, that’s perfectly fine!) For many, starting to embrace an active lifestyle tops their list of resolutions.
January sees a surge of newcomers at gyms, but it’s important to remember that you don’t need to start with intense workouts to prioritize your health. Integrating small amounts of simple movement into your day can have a lasting impact on your well-being.
Sometimes, big goals can feel overwhelming. Psychology research shows that overly ambitious targets put unnecessary pressure on our brains, making it harder to follow through. That’s why breaking goals into smaller, more manageable steps is more effective. James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, suggests that starting small helps routines stick. “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems,” he wrote. Creating simple systems – such as adding a little more movement to your day – can lead to significant success over time.
How long does it take to build a new habit? It depends. An article published on Healthline suggests it can take up to 66 days for a new behaviour to feel natural. Some habits are harder to develop. Either way, persistence is key.
Adding simple moves to your day doesn’t require an elaborate plan. Start small. For instance, instead of driving to the mailbox, try walking to collect your mail. An after-dinner stroll around the neighbourhood can aid digestion and offer a moment of calm. Playing games outdoors when the weather allows not only gets you moving but also offers an opportunity to bond with family and friends. Even taking 10 minutes away from your devices to stretch, dance or tidy up can promote a more active life.
Clear describes habits as “the compound interest of self-improvement.” Each small action builds on the last, leading to noticeable progress over time.
Developing simple habits can make your life feel more manageable. The start of the year is an excellent time to start. Every small habit you form is a step toward a healthier, happier you. Results may not come overnight, but taking the first step is what counts.
This year, focus on simple, sustainable movement and make 2025 a year of meaningful change.
