Step up with Pauline and Pam: Join the NS Walks movement

Pauline Halstead and Pam Comeau

In the picturesque community of Terence Bay, N.S., a vibrant group of people has discovered an active way to connect and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. What began as a simple idea has grown into a supportive community of walkers who gather weekly to explore new paths, share stories and forge lasting friendships.

We chatted with Pauline Halstead and Pam Comeau about the launch of their walking group and how it has enriched their lives.

In November 2022, Pauline, who was new to the community, took the initiative to start a walking group to meet new people. Pam, who had completed the NS Walks training course – an initiative by Hike Nova Scotia that provides people with the skills and knowledge to lead walks – quickly joined Pauline to support the group. It grew from there.

“I love being outdoors and supporting others to lead an active lifestyle,” Pam said. “I find inspiration in witnessing our group’s journey toward building endurance. Together, we are building a path toward a healthier lifestyle.” Pam said she values the conversations, laughter and weekly check-ins with fellow walkers, where they share the happenings in their lives.

Every Monday, the group starts their week by laughing, catching up with friends and welcoming new walkers that join them.

Their favorite destinations are along the coast. They frequently explore High Head, in Prospect, Shipley Head, in Terence Bay, and occasionally Polly’s Cove. They also enjoy venturing onto trails. “Our walking group appreciates the chance to venture off road and explore trails that offer breathtaking views,” Pam said.

Pauline expressed her excitement at being surrounded by like-minded individuals interested in forging new connections. “There’s an undeniable buzz when a new walker joins us and discovers the joy of the experience,” she said.

NS Walks delivers free training sessions for those interested in starting their own group. It’s a great place to start so you can feel confident that you know how to lead a group safely. “I say go for it, start your own group. It doesn’t matter the size; all it takes [to start] is two people and it will likely grow. If not, you still have two people making a difference in their lives. It’s worth it!” said Pam.

Pam and Pauline post upcoming walks on several community Facebook pages (Terence Bay and Lower Prospect, Neighbours of District 13, and Brookside Community Homeowners Association), usually on Thursday or Friday for the following Monday. This way, anyone new can read the walk description and decide if they want to join. If you’d prefer to get updates over email, they also send out a weekly note with all the details.
